Kart: Sainz Jr. to a point in the runner-up
The Spanish test of the Winning Karting Series, the sixth of the seven that consists of this international championship, was held this past weekend in the Aragonese circuit of Zuera with the record presence of 153 participants.
On the occasion that the contest ended up in the national territory, several unusual Spanish pilots of the series took advantage of the occasion to measure their level with the best karting pilots in the world. Thus, this time there were no less than 22 young compatriots in the verifications, of which a dozen, that is to say more than half, were concentrated in the KF3 category, the one reserved for the youngest. Retaking the thread of what has been happening throughout most of the season, Carlos Sainz Jr knew how to park the bad experience of the previous weekend and clearly showed himself again as the best of all our representatives. After winning the 7th best time in training, the son of the double World Rally Champion already set the tone since the qualifiers, winning one of his three sleeves and finishing 2nd and 3rd in the other two. This was worth placing in the 3rd place of the intermediate classification and leaving from the 2nd line of the grid in the Prefinal.
After an impeccable snatch, Sainz Jr was not long in placing himself in the lead, but the fight between the first was very close, with changes of position almost every lap. The Madrid driver battled to the last meter and finally managed to cross the finish line in 2nd position. This second place in the Prefinal gave the young Carlos Sainz Jr a place on the first line of the grid for the Final but forced him to start on the dirty side of the track and, indeed, only in the snatch he already lost several places. However, the Tony Junior Team rider immediately threw himself into the attack, passing a few laps to fight for third place, as the European Champion Nyck de Vries had taken advantage of the first measures to escape irretrievably in pursuit of victory while the British Alexander Albon had also established himself in the dolphin position. After a close battle, Carlos Sainz Jr finally managed to take third place and thus climb to the final podium.
The good result of our Runner-up in Europe in both races combined with a mediocre result in the Prefinal and a 7th place in the final of his great rival Danil Kvyat allow Sainz to place just one point of the Russian in the provisional classification of the WSK, where both fight for 2nd place. So, everything must be decided on the Italian track of Lonato, which will be the scene of the last test on November 1. Of the rest of the Spanish participants in KF3, Carlos Gil, Carmen Boix, Alex Toril, Adrián del Rio, Victor Colomé and Gerard Barrabeig also managed to qualify for the final races, but only the first managed to get into the top ten in the Final where I finished 9th.
Of our six representatives present in the KF2 category, four of them obtained the passport for the finals where the best result corresponded to the 3rd place of Jorge Pescador in the Prefinal. Suarez would be, with an 8th place, the best Spanish in the Final, in which the Japanese Yu Kanamaru prevailed ahead of Chris Lock, while also British Ben Cooper mathematically secured the title by finishing 4th in both sleeves. With regard to KZ2, the section reserved for go-karts with gear changes and in this event closed the season, the tactics of the Intrepid team would be the protagonist and taking advantage of the double abandonment of until now leader Marco Ardigò.
The Frenchman Jeremy Iglesias he gave the victory to his teammate Bas Lammers on the same finish line and this gave the title to the son of the former Formula 1 driver, while Belgian Rick Dreezen, despite having led the Final for several laps, had to settle for 3rd place in both finals. The Canarian rider Rubén Curbelo finished 13th in the Final and was the best Spanish in this category ahead of Oriol Dalmau. Finally, in Super KF, debutant Brandon Maïsano surprised everyone in the Single Final, unseating British Gary Catt and Frenchman Arnaud Kozlinski while Spaniards Adrià Domenech and Dani Simon finished 10th and 19th respectively.
